The History Of The Cross Inn
During the late 18th Century The Cross Inn was built as a pair of drovers cottages, surrounded by fields with a track down the hill into Cowbridge. The drovers were usually farm hands who would drive herds of sheep or cattle from places like Wick, St Athan and Ogmore to the market in Cowbridge.
The first indication of The Cross Inn as a freehold house for refreshments is registered in 1840. Rumour has it one Landlord, who ran the pu during the early 1850's, died under strange and unusual circumstances whilst riding his horse across the fields in Llanblethian. It was early morning on a clear and sunny day in May when the publican decided to ride his horse through the crops adjacent to to Llanblethian church, distracted by the call of another horseman, he turned to wave and did not notice the low hanging branch of the tree in his path which decapitated him as his horse galloped on.
It is said that a headless horseman can be seen at certain times galloping across from Llanblethian church towards The Cross Inn.
